The more I learn about what happened early Sunday, over on the southside of town, the angrier I become.
It’s not just that federally-driven storm troopers, under the dictates of a broken immigration system, seized and “disappeared” people - unnamed and unnumbered - with no civil word to devastated relatives about where they were taken. There has been no public explanation - only unhelpful silence - from state and federal authorities. This has only added gross insult to civil law injuries.
I believe Nashville’s city officials (including Mayor O’Connell and Metro Law Director Wally Dietz) and a few local news reporters are doing their best, asking to understand exactly what happened in the darkness here early Sunday. But neither answers nor adequate explanations have come as yet from the authorities who directed this. In particular, the federal and state officials who have caved in to this new regime - Governor, US Senators, Republicans in the Tennessee Legislature - have made themselves shamefully scarce.
In a saner time, a Tennessee Governor would at least offer helpful words and even insist that the feds and his own Highway Patrol identify who was taken away. But no such wise official behavior has come in 48 anxious hours. Loved ones of those taken are left to imagine the worst. Did their family members wake up this morning in other countries, in hell-hole prisons with no expectations of life or sensible treatment? Who knows?
In a saner moment, the US senators who stood by and allowed a stumbling new regime trash the notion of due process would stand on the same sidewalk where loved ones grieve these disappearances and say to us all they will insist that details be made public immediately.
Of course, in a saner world, a President who drives the trashing of federal agencies here and abroad - under cover of attacking “diversity” programs and to eliminate alleged “waste, fraud, and abuse” - would by now at least have assured seniors that their personal Social Security data will not be compromised and that their services from the Veterans Administration will not be lost.
But none of that sanity is guiding the Wrecking-Ball Administration at the White House, nor among servile minions in the Congress where the damage to America is being permitted by the silence of laggards in Congress who ought to know and do better.
Those who might know aren’t telling. And the American officials who should aren’t insisting they tell us all, either. This situation over the weekend in Nashville, with agents in SWAT gear and dark shades, is downright alarming and scary.
Families of those taken away are left in devastation and fear, left to sit and sob on the curb. Two mornings later, there is no word as yet that any of the individuals spirited away were taken before a judge or magistrate to speak for themselves.
If you are not alarmed by what happened here on Sunday - and how our federal and state officials are failing to do their humane duties about it - you aren’t paying enough attention.
This is not OK.
Unbelievable that this is taking place in Our Country, no less here in Our Community. But it isn’t just Saturday/Sunday that this took place. I am hearing reports that a similar action occurred last night, in the same location. We must hold our State and Federal Officials Accountable, if not now, when?! Heartbroken 💔
Due process of law is a fundamental principle in legal systems, guaranteeing fairness and impartiality in all legal proceedings. The Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments of the U.S. Constitution explicitly protect due process rights, ensuring that no one is deprived of life, liberty, or property without it.
The Fifth Amendment protects against federal government actions violating due process, while the Fourteenth Amendment applies the same protections to state governments.
Shouldn’t Nashville be “under the due process umbrella?”
